Choosing The Right Words

The ultimate goal of speech is to make one’s own thoughts understood by others. Choosing the right words when speaking, or singing, allows individuals to successfully transmit their intended messages. It is important to choose respectful words, for respect commands attention. Communication should be used to facilitate mutual understanding and open mindedness, but it often leads to polarization of opinions when diction is left unchecked. Much of the animosity in the world today is the product of miscommunication. For example, negatively charged dialogue characterizes the two-party system in the United States. Most conversations between Republicans and Democrats end not with cooperation and compromise but a larger divide between ideologies. On the other hand, positive communication is to thank for bipartisanship, international agreements and so much more. In a nutshell, word choice affects our relationships with friends, family, coworkers, and everyone else we acquaint ourselves with. On a macroscale, word choice dictates the progression of the global community.
